When doing your basic dog training it is best to execute the lessons away from any outside influences like sticks or bones that he may want to play with. Walk with him to an empty field or park where there is plenty of free space. Tell your dog firmly that you want him to sit, then place your hand over his hind quarters and gently push him down into a sitting position, when it is down say sit and tell him he's a good boy, then reward him with a treat.
If you keep repeating this lesson, your dog will sit when he is told, because he realizes that by doing what he is told he will be rewarded and also because he can sense that you are pleased with his efforts. Eventually your dog will naturally do what you tell him, and you can dispense with the treats.
