Donald used to boast to his drinking friends how he could maintain a demanding and full-time job and get intoxicated virtually every night. To complicate things further, at his job his last two work appraisals were less than adequate. And finally, his two-and-a-half-year relationship with his girlfriend had gotten worse due to his lack of patience, financial difficulties, angry outbursts, and his depression.
Though Donald was only twenty-five years old, he honestly began looking like he was in his early forties. Sadly, this is what irresponsible drinking can do to an individual. And in all honesty he realized that he was suffering from the negative consequences of alcohol dependency or alcohol abuse and that he was too young to throw away his life to abusive and unhealthy drinking. So initially he tried to drink in moderation. Unfortunately, he soon comprehended the fact that he lost his self control after consuming his first drink. Due to the fact that this was an incident that was repeated virtually every time he drank, this obviously disturbed him a great deal. In actual fact, he started to wonder if he was exhibiting some of the stages of alcoholism.
After mentioning his alcohol drinking problems and his careless and excessive drinking with his girlfriend, he finally made up his mind to schedule an appointment to see his healthcare practitioner. When Donald saw his family doctor, he actually confirmed that he has been drinking in an abusive manner, that he may be manifesting behavior that is representative of the various alcoholism stages, and that he wants to stop drinking. His healthcare practitioner referred Donald to Doctor Jones, a drug and alcohol addiction psychiatrist, who convinced Donald to enroll in an alcohol and drug rehabilitation center as an in-patient for alcohol detox and alcohol rehabilitation. The good news is that Donald would also be able to get medical treatment for his depression at this treatment center.
After three months of comprehensive rehabilitation, Donald left the in-patient treatment clinic and continued his recovery via outpatient therapy and via going to local Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. Encouraged to change his life in a healthier way, Donald joined a fitness center and began working out three or four times per week. Within four months Donald was a new man. He was in shape, he was eating nutritious meals, he was not depressed anymore, and most important of all, he remained sober for several months. He also became more patient, he did not resort to angry outbursts, and he became a more caring individual in his relationship with his girlfriend. Stated briefly, getting and staying sober was the best decision Donald had ever made.
